Microneedling Care Guide

Stimulating Your Skin’s Natural Renewal Process

Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a device containing very fine sterile needles to create controlled microchannels within the skin.

These tiny, precisely controlled injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin—two proteins that are essential for healthy, youthful-looking skin.

At LumiLife Aesthetics + Wellness, microneedling is performed under physician supervision using evidence-based protocols designed to improve skin quality while minimizing downtime.

Depending on your skin’s needs, microneedling may also be combined with treatments such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF), or topical exosomes to support the skin’s natural regenerative processes. While early studies are encouraging, research continues regarding the added benefits of these combination therapies, and results vary among individuals.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling may help improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Hyperpigmentation (selected patients)
  • Overall skin tone and brightness

Microneedling is appropriate for many skin types and tones, making it a versatile treatment option for skin rejuvenation.

Before Your Treatment

Preparing your skin properly helps promote healing and reduces the risk of irritation.

Please:

Stay well hydrated.

Eat a light meal before your appointment.

Arrive with clean skin and no makeup whenever possible.

Inform your physician of any recent cosmetic procedures or new medications.

Notify us if you are prone to cold sores, as preventive antiviral medication may be recommended for treatments around the lips.

Skin Care Products

Unless otherwise instructed by your physician, we generally recommend temporarily discontinuing the following products approximately 5–7 days before treatment:

  • Prescription retinoids (such as tretinoin)
  • Retinol products
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Other exfoliating products that may increase skin sensitivity

Sun Exposure

Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning for at least one week before treatment.

Recently sunburned skin should not be treated.

Please Inform Your Physician If You Have:

  • An active acne breakout
  • Active cold sores
  • Skin infection
  • Open wounds
  • Eczema flare
  • Psoriasis flare
  • Recent facial surgery
  • History of abnormal scarring or keloids
  • Autoimmune skin disorders
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (individualized discussion may be appropriate)

Treatment may need to be postponed until the skin has healed.

What Happens During Treatment?

After cleansing your skin, a topical anesthetic is usually applied to improve comfort.

Once the skin is numb, the microneedling device is gently passed over the treatment area, creating thousands of controlled microscopic channels within the skin.

Depending on your individualized treatment plan, your physician may apply:

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
  • Topical exosomes
  • Physician-selected recovery serums

These products are applied immediately after treatment, when the temporary microchannels may enhance topical delivery. While this approach is commonly used in aesthetic medicine, research is ongoing to better define the additional clinical benefits compared with microneedling alone.

Most treatments take approximately 45–75 minutes, including the application of topical anesthetic.

What Should I Expect After Treatment?

Immediately after treatment, it is normal to experience:

  • Redness (similar to a mild sunburn)
  • Mild swelling
  • Skin tightness
  • Warmth
  • Mild pinpoint bleeding during the procedure
  • Temporary skin sensitivity

Most redness improves within 24–72 hours, although recovery varies depending on the treatment depth.

Some patients experience mild flaking or dryness during the first week as the skin renews itself.

When Will I See Results?

Many patients notice brighter, smoother skin within several weeks.

Because collagen remodeling takes time, improvements continue gradually over the following two to six months.

For concerns such as acne scars or skin laxity, a series of treatments is usually recommended to achieve optimal results.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Treatment recommendations vary depending on your goals.

General guidelines include:

  • Skin maintenance: 3 treatments
  • Fine lines and texture: 3–4 treatments
  • Acne scars: 4–6 treatments
  • Surgical scars: individualized treatment plan

Treatments are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

After Your Treatment

Your skin will be more sensitive during the healing process.

During the First 24 Hours

Keep the treated skin clean.

Apply only products recommended by your physician.

Stay well hydrated.

Sleep on a clean pillowcase.

Allow your skin to heal naturally.

Avoid for 24–48 Hours

  • Makeup
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Excessive sweating
  • Direct sun exposure

Avoid for Approximately One Week

Unless otherwise instructed:

  • Retinoids
  • Retinol
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Chemical exfoliants
  • Waxing of treated areas

Resume your normal skincare routine gradually as your skin heals.

Sun Protection

Daily sunscreen is essential following microneedling.

We recommend using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher once the skin has recovered sufficiently, along with protective clothing and avoidance of prolonged sun exposure whenever possible.

Combination Treatments

Depending on your individualized treatment plan, microneedling may be combined with:

  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
  • PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)
  • Exosome therapy
  • PRX Skin Revitalization (performed during separate visits as recommended)
  • Medical-grade skincare

Combining treatments may improve overall skin rejuvenation in selected patients, although not every patient requires combination therapy.
